What can a study chart tell us?
Neurotransmitters help nerve cells communicate. Charts of their associations with mental health conditions can introduce vocabulary, but they are not a person's test results or a diagnostic tool.
Why a chart cannot diagnose a condition
Depression, for example, involves interacting genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors. Describing every symptom as too much or too little of one substance misses this complexity. Arrows on a chart cannot guide medication choices.
A useful approach for families
Write down questions about symptoms and medication for the clinician. Do not change or stop treatment based on an educational summary. Learning is a way to ask better questions, rather than label a person.
About the study note
The accompanying image is a conceptual illustration of neuronal communication. It is not an actual microscopy photograph or a diagnostic or treatment tool.
