Causes of Osteoporosis and Ways to Prevent It

Factors that cause osteoporosis and ways to prevent it

Osteoporosis is one of the most common skeletal diseases at older ages, especially among elderly women. The disease occurs when bone tissue and density decrease and the bones become brittle and prone to fracture. In many cases, osteoporosis shows no outward sign until a fracture occurs; for this reason, prevention and awareness of the factors that contribute to it are very important.

⸻

Factors that contribute to the development of osteoporosis

1. Increasing age
With increasing age, the building of new bones slows down and bone mass decreases.

2. Menopause in women
The decline of the hormone estrogen after menopause speeds up the process of bone breakdown.

3. Calcium and vitamin D deficiency
These two vital substances are essential for the health of the bones, and their deficiency plays an important role in the development of osteoporosis.

4. A family history of osteoporosis
If a genetic history exists, the likelihood of developing the disease increases.

5. Low activity and a sedentary lifestyle
Little physical activity leads to the gradual wasting away of bone mass.

6. Use of tobacco and alcohol
These substances put the health of the bones at risk by reducing calcium absorption.

7. Long-term use of certain medications
Corticosteroid or anticonvulsant drugs can reduce bone density over time.

8. An unhealthy diet
Excessive consumption of salt, carbonated drinks and caffeine also plays a role in reducing the body’s calcium reserves.

Symptoms of osteoporosis

Although most affected people do not notice the disease until a fracture occurs, some of the warning signs are:
•    Chronic or sudden lower back pain
•    Loss of height over time
•    Stooping of the posture
•    Bone fracture from a slight impact

⸻

Ways to prevent osteoporosis

1. Supplying the calcium and vitamin D the body needs
Using dairy products, leafy vegetables, fatty fish, almonds and direct sunlight are important sources of these two elements.

2. Regular physical activity
Exercises such as walking, strength training and yoga strengthen the structure of the bone.

3. Quitting tobacco and reducing alcohol consumption
These harmful habits disrupt calcium absorption and increase the risk of osteoporosis.

4. Maintaining a suitable weight
Excessive thinness and obesity both disturb the health of the bone.

5. Regular check-ups of bone health
People over 50 years of age or those at high risk should preferably have a bone density measurement test done periodically.

⸻

Summary

Osteoporosis is a silent but serious disease that can have a great impact on the quality of life of the elderly. By observing simple points in nutrition, activity and lifestyle, its occurrence can largely be prevented or the progression of the disease slowed.
